Pageant queen remembered for inner beauty

Everyone in Margaret “Marge” Dolan McLennon’s life knew her as a beauty, both inside and out.

Although her looks took center stage when she was crowned Miss Chicago at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair, her family and friends remember McLennon as a woman who spent her life raising money for charities.

McLennon, 94, who lived in Palatine, Lombard and Bloomingdale, died Tuesday surrounded by family.

Born in Chicago on Nov. 12, 1914, McLennon was the fifth of nine children. After her sister entered her into the Miss Chicago contest at age 19, McLennon won the title during the Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago.

With her days of pageant crowns seemingly behind her, McLennon dedicated her life to helping young women gain education and overcome poverty. As chairwoman of a local Big Sisters in the 1970s, she helped establish a clinic to provide prenatal and postnatal care for unwed mothers.

Her family said people always thought McLennon was a winner because of her drive to help others.

Tyra, Ashton to celebrate hit show True Beauty

‘True Beauty’ has just premiered this past Monday January 5th and was a smash success. The TV reality show features 6 women and 4 men living together in a Los Angeles mansion under the impression that they are competing in a beauty pageant like reality competition series in which they will be judged solely on their physical beauty.
Each episode features the judges monitoring the contestants, critiquing their behaviors, and ultimately eliminating one contestant. The contestants will only be told the truth about the competition as they watch a montage of their show behavior after their eliminations.

Does Getting to Know the Contestants Make You Care About Miss America?

clipped from buzzsugar.com

Last Friday, TLC premiered a new reality series called Miss America: Countdown to the Crown that follows 52 pageant queens vying for this year’s Miss America crown (they did something similar last year).

Does Getting to Know the Contestants Make You Care About Miss America?

Yes. It’s interesting to get to know these women as real people.

No. I just like the pageant — not this extra reality show stuff.

No. Beauty queen competitions will never be something I care about.

Other (I’ll tell you below)

These days, beauty pageants battle to remain relevant now that judging a woman’s swimsuit bod and “peace on earth” answers seems a bit . . . retro.

Adopt a Mom

You’re Awesome – We Reached Our Goal!!!
A few months ago, I started my own little project called “Adopt-A-Mom”. For ten dollars, a gift (manicure/pedicure set, hand/foot cream) was given to a mother, or woman affected by domestic violence. I further extended my project to all mothers, and then branched to grandmothers, aunts and friends. My goal was one hundred women, and I have matched that number!

Florida Strawberry Festival Pageant to be held January 17th.

clipped from cherrylsbridal.com

Kristen Smith’s reign as Florida Strawberry Festival queen is drawing to a close.  She crowns the 2009 queen at a Jan. 17 pageant.

Thirty-two young women – including Smith’s twin sister Lauren – are scheduled to compete for the title in a pageant that starts at 6 p.m. at Tomlin Middle School, 501 N. Woodrow Wilson St., Plant City.

The pageant will have a couple of changes – one subtle, the other very apparent. This is the first competition since the pageant sponsor, the Plant City Lions Club, raised academic standards and abolished the swimsuit competition in favor of casual wear.

The club also raised academic standards, from a minimum 2.75 grade point average to 3.0 GPA.  The pageant is for Plant City area women who are 16 and 20 years old.
