Miss America Outstanding Teen 2008 will visit Austin

By Karen Colbenson

Post-Bulletin, Austin MN

Here she comes, Miss America Outstanding Teen 2008, to Austin.

Caitlin Brunell, a sophomore at Trinity Christian High School in Virginia, will visit several Austin schools Monday as part of her tour across the United States to promote her platform. Through literature and stories, Brunell will speak with students on the theme of “being proud of your differences.” Former Austin resident and student Angela McDermott, Miss Twin Cities 2008, will serve as her hostess and guide for the day.

As Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen, Brunell walked the runway at the third Miss America’s Outstanding Teen pageant in August 2007 in the Linda Chapin Theater at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Visiting Austin is one step of Brunell’s journey that will take her across the country to promote scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, community involvement and healthy living for the nation’s youth.

Through an official partnership with the US Dream Academy, Brunell will also work to improve the outlook of young students by increasing literacy. In addition, she will continue to work on her personal platform “Caitlin’s Closet,” a program that makes special gowns and dresses available for students who are unable to afford them.

Pageant Queen Katie Rees Arrested

The former Miss Nevada that earned the wrath of Donald Trump for her racy photos and party girl antics is in trouble with the law. Katie Rees was arrested by a Las Vegas police officer in the early morning hours of February 6 and charged with speeding, driving with no proof of insurance, driving with suspended license plates, and resisting a police officer.

It all began when Rees’ car was pulled over by the officer for speeding. According to the official record the 23-year-old beauty queen became violent with the arresting officers, kicking and throwing elbows at them. She was taken into custody at the Clark County Detention Center, processed, had her mugshot taken and was then released without bail. A hearing at the Las Vegas Justice Court has been scheduled for March 8.

The legal representative for Rees tells a different story. According to Mario Torres, her Florida-based lawyer, it was the Vegas cops that were the ones in the wrong. “Based on the information I’ve received, the officer was very aggressive with her,” Torres told the Associated Press. “They used aggression against her.” Torres also says that Rees may have had a tooth chipped or knocked out in her encounter with the officers.

On Monday, February 4th, Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund visited the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as the official Goodwill Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network. Each patient that Kirsten met with touched her heart as she heard their stories of hope, courage and strength. Kirsten offered her wonderful smile and good wishes to all the children and said, “My very first visit to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was everything I thought it would be and so much more. These children have inspired me with their joy and their spirit and that’s an incredible gift. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings.”

It has only been one week since Kirsten was crowned in Las Vegas, and she is off to a beautiful start making national television appearances, and her first corporate appearance as Miss America at the Philadelphia Auto Show.

VIDEO: Miss USA in New York

Weinandy assists Haglund to Miss America crown

davemissamerica.jpgLast weekend, Michigan let out an enormous yell of triumph when Kirsten Haglund became the first Miss Michigan to become Miss America in 20 years.

Her win was the result of hundreds of hours of preparation made possible by a beating heart of assistants and consultants who became more like her family then her staff.

A crucial vein in this team was Aquinas’ own Dave Weinandy, Special Assistant to the Provost for Campus Life and Communications professor by day, Communications consultant to Miss Michigan by mid-day and weekends.

It all started in 1999 when Weinandy was called by the state organization for the Miss Michigan pageant to become a part of the team. At first Weinandy was hesitant thinking, “I’m probably not going to do this…there are a lot of stereotypes” but somehow over the course of the meeting, his mind and his life was changed forever when he said yes.

Weinandy has coached nine Miss Michigans with several women making it to the top 10.
Weinandy drills the pageant hopefuls with prospective interview quest-ions, helps them build their plat-form and gets them out into the public eye.

This last part of the job includes Weinandy sending out brochures to different institutions telling them about his girl and from there, appearances and public speeches are booked.

But it was not until this year that one of Weinandy’s girls made it all the way. Although Haglund was as close to perfect as possible during the event, from her gown and swimsuit, to her talent and interview, Weinandy was still filled with anticipation and hope for Haglund saying, “It’s almost like preparing for the Olympics…you don’t want to change a young lady, but you want her to peak.”
