Take a Gondola Ride With Miss America

Miss America goes on a gondola ride in Las Vegas
Click here for Miss America Photos!!!As promised, here are our Luxe Life photos of the gorgeous 52 contestants in the Miss America Pageant as they relaxed last night on the canals of the Venetian Hotel’s Grand Canal Shops. Lynn Weidner, chairman of the Miss America host committee is the wife of Venetian chairman Bill Wiedner and she told me: “The girls are having a grand time in Vegas. They love it here. Tomorrow though its time to get serious and then Wednesday the preliminaries will commence. This is when the nerve-wracking kicks in.”

The girls went in groups of four in each gondola, some even getting their handsome gondoliers to sing romantic Italian love songs! Everybody from Miss America chieftain Art McMasters agreed they have turned themselves out to look like TV and movie stars. He told me: “We never know from year to year what state finalists will show up for the big pageant, but we’ve been spectacularly blessed this year with younger more glamorous girls than ever before. It’s a spectacular group, but we’re about scholarships and education so our emphasis is unlike a beauty pageant. However, this time they are truly dazzling and their brains are matched by their beauty and radiance.”

Miss Nevada, Cady Cole told Luxe Life: “All the girls are loving Vegas. They can’t believe some of the attractions we have here. They were speechless thinking we could have canal waterways with gondolas in the middle of a shopping center in the middle of a resort hotel. They all say they have never seen anything like it and they never stop asking questions about my home-town! It took us just about a day to all become friends and now everybody is rooting for each other to win.” This year for the first time viewers will be able to vote on the Ms. Congeniality portion of the contest from the three girls that all the other competitors have already picked between themselves. We’ll meet those arm-charms on Friday when CMT broadcasts a reality show on the making of a Miss America contestant.

robin Leach and Miss America Hopefuls
Rehearsals get underway today for next Monday’s live cable telecast on CMT-TV with ‘Dancing with the Stars’ dazzler Mario Lopez as host. Tonight he’ll meet the judges for the very first time when Mrs. Weidner hosts the star-studded panel. Actresses Debbie Allen and Delta Burke, TV’s ‘Hardball’ host Chris Matthews, singer-composer Michael Feinstein, ‘America’s Next Top Model’ judge Nigel Barker and former Miss America 1981 Susan Powell, who hosts Discovery’s ‘Home Matters’ will be welcomed to a private reception and dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s Postrio restaurant in St. Mark’s Square at the Venetian.

Luxe Life will meet up with the contestants each day this week as the rehearsals give way to the preliminaries and check in with us for each day’s new photo coverage. Then we’ll be at next Monday’s live telecast and give you one of the first interviews with the new winner who’ll replace Jennifer Berry of Oklahoma who won last year when for the 1st time in its 85-year-history Ms America uprooted from its Atlantic City home for its initial Vegas debut at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood. That broadcast seen by more than 27 million viewers ranks as the most-watched telecast in CMT history and network executives are hoping to shatter the 30 million count this year!

Miss Colorado hoping to get lucky in Vegas, come home Miss America

Janie Allen, the 23-year-old Miss Colorado, is in Las Vegas with every intention of becoming Miss America.

“I have a great shot to win this year,” she tells me. “I feel prepared. I absolutely believe I’m coming home with the crown. I’m not going there to lose.”

The Miss America Pageant comes down at 6 p.m. Jan. 29 on cable’s CMT. You can see Allen on “Pageant School” at 7 p.m. Friday on CMT. “Pageant School” also airs 4 p.m. Jan. 29 on VH1.

Misbehaving pageant winners have been in the news lately – Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss New Jersey USA, Miss Nevada USA.

“There are wonderful young ladies who compete in the Miss USA system, but we are different,” Allen says. “We are first and foremost a scholarship organization.”

I love it when they say that.

Allen also notes that the Miss USA system does not have a talent element – and Allen has a lot of that. She graduated last summer from Metropolitan State College of Denver where she studied piano. She’ll wow the judges with George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.

“I’m so excited I just can’t wait,” she says. She also has a boyfriend, so forget about it.

Lopez prepping for Miss America

By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith

Mario Lopez tells us that although many celebrities are currently vying for a spot on “Dancing With the Stars,” his famous friends aren’t interested.

“They saw how much work I was going through so they said, ‘Forget that,’ ” says Lopez with a laugh. However, Lopez claims he has no regrets about doing the show, which helped revitalize his career and brought a new woman into his life, his dance partner, Karina Smirnoff. Rumors are still swirling around the “friends,” who’ve been spotted vacationing and even spending Thanksgiving together. “She’s been busy because she’s been doing the tour,” Lopez tells us of their current time together. “She’s a good friend. She’s a great person. I have nothing but respect for her, and I think the world of her.”

If there is indeed more than a friendship, Smirnoff might not be too happy about the fact that Lopez will be surrounded by many beautiful women as he’s set to host the Miss America Pageant, which will air Jan. 29 on CMT.

“I want to try to make it a lot of fun and keep the girls at ease,” he says of his duties. Sounds like a sweet gig for a bachelor. “There could be worse jobs,” he observes.

Miss USA Out of Rehab

The reigning Miss USA checked out of a Pennsylvania rehab facility Sunday and is back at her Trump Place apartment, a rep for the Miss Universe Organization confirmed.

Spokeswoman Lark-Marie Anton, however, denied a report that Conner was planning on attending a welcome back party at NYC nightspot Stereo, a locale where the 21-year-old was once spotted consuming alcohol and engaging in other behavior unbecoming of a pageant winner.

“Right now she’s just going to get used to being out,” a source close to the situation told the New York Daily News. “She needs some time to breathe.”

After almost losing her crown last month in the wake of reports that chronicled her underage hard-partying ways, Conner, who has denied being an alcoholic, spent the past few weeks mulling over where she went wrong at the Caron Foundation in Wernersville, Pennsylvania.

Miss Universe co-owner Donald Trump, who deigned to give Conner a second chance if she promised to enter rehab to get herself straightened out, predicted that the Kentucky native would be the “great comeback kid.”

“You’ll never know how much I appreciate Mr. Trump for saving me on this one,” Conner said after the press conference in which Trump chose not to utter his trademark phrase. “He could have said ‘You’re Fired’—he’s a very, very compassionate person.”
