ATLANTIC CITY — Boardwalk Hall, one of the city’s iconic buildings, can be converted into a casino hotel without losing its historic value, state Sen. Bill Gormley said Friday.

Gormley, R-Atlantic, is pushing the idea of preserving the facade of the 77-year old structure as well as its 151-foot roof and its historic organ to make room for a new $3 billion casino hotel. The West Hall, an annex built in the 1970s, would be demolished.

“You could use the building as a catalyst for economic revival without turning our back on history,” Gormley said, comparing the idea to the renovation of Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Casino moguls Steve Wynn and Donald Trump have reportedly discussed the idea of using Boardwalk Hall as a part of the site for a new casino hotel. The idea sparked letters of protest and prompted Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson — who oversees the authority that owns the hall — to announce that he would oppose any effort to raze the building.

Once the site of the Miss America Pageant, Boardwalk Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places, giving it some protection from demolition. There was talk of razing the hall years ago before a $90 million renovation, completed in 2001, converted the crumbling building into a 14,000-seat sports and entertainment arena.

Donald Trump and Rosie O’Donnell have gotten personal, lobbing a barrage of increasingly nasty insults at each other stemming from a dispute over the Miss USA scandal.

Trump recently gave a second chance to Miss USA Tara Conner, allowing her to keep her crown following a wave of reports that she had taken part in underage drinking.

He made the announcement at a news conference with Conner, where she tearfully admitted drinking as a minor at New York nightclubs. She turned 21 a day before the news conference.

Speaking Wednesday on “The View,” which airs on CTV and which O’Donnell co-hosts, she said the event was a publicity stunt that annoyed her “on a multitude of levels.”

She said Trump is in no position to be acting as a moral compass for America’s youth.

“There he is, hair looping, going everyone, everyone deserves a second chance,” she said. “He’s the moral authority? Left the first wife, had an affair, left the second wife, had an affair. Had kids both times, but he’s the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America,” she said to roars of audience laughter. “Donald, sit and spin, my friend.”

Rosie also said she expected Trump to sue her but added “he’ll probably be bankrupt by that time so I won’t have to worry.”

Trump, not known for keeping his opinions to himself either, issued an equally stinging response on the television entertainment show “The Insider.”

He slammed everything from her looks to her former talk show and magazine, and countered her claims that he has gone bankrupt.

“Rosie attacks me personally? I know her fairly well because her show failed. She didn’t retire. She didn’t get the ratings! Her magazine called `Rosie’ was a total disaster,” he said.

“She’s out of her mind. I will probably sue Rosie for a number of reasons. I’m worth a lot of money. She doesn’t tell the facts,” he added.

Trump, a real-estate mogul, star of “The Apprentice” reality show and co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization went so far as to attack O’Donnell’s appearance, saying “she looks like a slob” and describing her as “basically a disaster.”

He denied Rosie’s claim that he has experienced financial woes.

“I never went bankrupt, but she said I went bankrupt. So probably I’ll sue her because it would be fun. I’d like to take some money out of her fat-ass pockets,” he told “The Insider.”

He also threatened to send one of his friends to pick up Rosie’s wife Kelli.

VIDEO available: Miss USA Possibly In Berks County Rehab Center

She was given a second chance at her title. Now the reigning Miss U-S-A may be getting that fresh start in Berks County. Tara Conner was expected to arrive yesterday at the Caron Facility Treatment Center in South Heidelberg Township. Conner’s excessive and underage partying with alcohol put her in the spotlight. Some local pageant experts say how she handles herself post- rehab will be important to the future of the Miss U-S-A Organization. >> CARMEN: “It can show that the Miss USA organization is interested in forgiving its title holders and helping them grow or it can be seen as an organization that’s not willing to hold its title holders accountable.” >> No word on how long Tara Conner will stay in a rehab facility.

REVEALED! THE DISHY, SCANDALOUS DETAILS BEHIND THE DONALD-MISS USA SCANDAL!

Heidi Bressler, the stunning contestant in the first season of Donald Trump‘s reality TV show The Apprentice who was fired by Trump, but who is now Trump magazine’s National Accounts Director, tells Star that Trump didn’t dethrone scandal-plagued Miss USA 2006 Tara Conner for two reasons: The on-going drama is fantastic publicity for the sixth season of The Apprentice, which debuts on NBC in just a few weeks, on Jan. 7. Plus, he’s a good-natured guy — especially when a gorgeous woman is involved.

“He’s a good guy,” Heidi, who’s been making the rounds on this week’s talks shows such as MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, tells Star. “I do believe he does feel bad for her. He’ll fire you if you’re disloyal or have sticky fingers, and she didn’t do any of the above.”

While some observers may roll their eyes at the notion that the real estate mogul is a softie — think boardroom firings on The Apprentice — Heidi says it’s a different story when it comes to sexy, stunning women. “He has a hard time being mean to a pretty girl,” she says. “All Tara would have to do is bat her eyelashes!”

The United Nation Pageant System takes stand on Miss USA controversy

In spite of the latest string of scandals that the pageant industry has suffered, the United Nation Pageants wants to remind people of the good works that the pageant community brings to the country. It is just the matter of choosing the right program.

The United Nation Pageants organization offers something different. Our titleholders are selected based on her inner qualities, personal accomplishments, commitment to community service and her passion for how she has and will continue to make a difference in lives of those less fortunate. “Compromising the integrity of our crown only brings distraction and bad press limiting our ability to do the job in which we were given” states 19 year old Brittney Dimes, the reigning Miss United Nation US 2006.

The United Nation system is a program that focuses on community service and providing scholarships to women of all ages. While our delegates are beautiful and physically fit, the purpose of the competition is to showcase their accomplishments in the area of voluntarism.

About the United Nation Pageants

Established in 1996, the United Nation Pageant was founded by Sarah Boothe, a 25 year veteran of the pageant saw how the pageant industry seemed to care more about advertising and sponsorships rather than the contestants and their accomplishment so she created a program for “real women”; the program will not only focus on the contestants endless beauty, but their desire to succeed, their dedication to service, courage to fight for what is right and most of importantly, the passion to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
